The Robotech TV series is an animated series made as an international co-production by Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Production as part of their Robotech franchise. The story involves an ongoing fictitious military strife between humans and three races of alien invaders from outer space, over the fate of the planet Earth as well as the control of Protoculture, an energy source with alien origins. The series feature the use of Robotechnology, a chiefly-militaristic field of science which resembles a combination of what we today know as Robotics and Information Technology (IT).
The series is divided into three chapters or sagas:
- Robotech: The Macross Saga: Features First Robotech War, the battle between humans and a race of giant humanoids known as Zentraedi
- Robotech: The Robotech Masters: Features Second Robotech War, the battle between humans and the last remnants of a race of ruthless but scientifically-advanced humanoids known as Robotech Masters
- Robotech: The New Generation: Features Third Robotech War, a Pyrrhic decade-long strife between humans and a mysterious race known as Invid.
Making of the Robotech
The Robotech TV series is neither an original animated series nor a dubbed version of any single anime shows. Robotech is in fact made out of three separate unrelated anime shows, (known as The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, ) spliced and edited to form one consistent ongoing storyline.
Originally, Robotech started as straight English dub of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. However, the number of episodes needed for daily first run syndication was 65 and Macross had only 36 episodes. Thus a new solution was created, the creators decided to take two other shows, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, and use footage from them to create a whole new show, Robotech. Characters names were changed to better appeal to a western audience and episodes were edited to conform with the new storyline. The name was not created until legal issues began with DC Comics, who had the toy rights to the Southern Cross series, attempted legal confrontation. After a negotiation, DC agreed to give them the rights to the toy, as well as the name of one of their comic series, Robotech Defenders.
