After the success of Robotech, Matchbox picked up the license to make Robotech toys, and produced a video showing off various prototype toys and ideas for the 1986 line. This video included many toys in a form which was entirely different from their final release. This includes the infamous VF-1 figure, which is shown transforming into a Guardian mode, despite only betting able to sustain the main Jet configuration in final release. Other notable changes include a VHT-1 Veritech Hover Tank model which is far less-stable compared to the final release, but includes a gun, as well as an Invid Shocktrooper figure which is much more posable (featuring full articulation at the wrists and feet, wherein the final release had much more stationary arms and feet) and accurate to the series paint-wise. A wide variety of doll costume possibilities are also discussed, only a few of which were actually used in the final line.
