Operation Groundhog was an assault conducted by the Robotech Expeditionary Force during the Pioneer Expedition. The REF intended to meet with the Robotech Masters on Tirol to prevent a Second Robotech War. However, their arrival came at a time when the planet was conquered by the Regent and the Masters themselves had left to retrieve the Protoculture Matrix on Earth.
Upon their arrival, the SDF-3 was attacked by the Invid forces at Tirol who succeeded in damaging the ships Fold Drive. As a result, the REF was stranded in Tirolspace and thus decided to make a push to liberate the Tirolian homeworld. They learnt that Tiresia still remained, and as a result, Vice-Admiral Rick Hunter decided to send a ground force to liberate the capital. Led by Commander Vince Grant along with Colonel Jonathan Wolffe, this force consisted of the Fleet's Zentraedi complement and involved the use of the Ground Mobile Unit in what became known as Operation Groundhog.
