Breetai Dolza Exedore First Contact

The first meeting between the Zentraedi and the Human race. (Macross Saga: "First Contact")

The First Robotech War was a devastating war between the Robotech Defense Force of the United Earth Forces and the Zentraedi. It began in 2009 after an alien race known as the Zentraedi attacked Macross Island in the South Pacific on Earth. Most of the war was a battle fought by the forces of the SDF-1 against various Zentraedi collections, unlike the Second Robotech War, which saw wider participation on the Earth. The war was kept a secret to citizens still on the Earth. The conflict lasted two years before ending in April 2011 in a Pyrrhic victory for humanity.

Prelude to war[]

Global War[]

Before all nations came together as the United Earth Government, all Nations were at war with each other. There were battles being fought inside the countries that were at war. The United States was one of several allied nations fighting in the conflict. In 1999, the United States Navy Carrier battle group was tracking a Russian Sub in the South Pacific. At the same time an alien ship came out of hyperspace and entered Earth's Atmosphere and flew right over several cities and the Aircraft Carrier USS Kenosha and a fighter squadron led by Roy Fokker. Then it crashed landed on Macross Island. The United Nations declared a Cease Fire between all of the nations of Earth. On Macross Island, Admiral Donald Hayes, Captain Henry Gloval, Lt. Roy Fokker, Dr. Emil Lang, Colonel T. R. Edwards, and a couple Marines were on shore investigating the wreckage of the Alien ship.

War[]

Mars Incident[]

In 2003, the UEG base on Mars, Mars Base Sara, was located by Krohn'sZentraedi ship, after successfully testing Protoculture reverse-engineered technology. The base was devastated, ant the Oberth cruiser destroyed, but they managed to destroy Krohn's ship before it escaped, though it made a distress call which would eventually draw more aliens. The incident was covered as a Anti-Unification League terrorist attack.(Mars Base One Part Five)

Battle of Macross Island[]

Zentraedi Scoutship-3 Macross Saga-1

The war officially began in February 2009 on Macross Island. On that day was the scheduled launch of SDF-1. It was during the ceremony that the Zentraedi fleet lead by Commander Breetai was in the solar system. The appearance of the Zentraedi caused SDF-1 Reflex cannons to fire. Commander Breetai traced the energy to earth on Macross island and began to launch an Invasion force of battlepods. United Earth Forces detected The alien forces on their radar in space so they sent the first wave of fighters made up of Armor class carriers, Oberth class destroyers, QF-300E Ghost Fighter bombers and Lockhee SF-3A launcher 2 space fighters. But these fighters and carriers were little match to the Zentradi war machine so they were quickly eliminated. After the Zentraedi eliminated the space forces they entered earth's atmosphere to Macross Island. The Zentraedi battlepods soon landed on the beaches of Macross island and began attacking the city of Macross island, the first battle of the first Robotech war had begun. The RDF responded by sending VF-1 Valkyrie fighters to defend the city. After a series of dogfights in the sky, Commander Breetai sent in Battlepods which landed on Macross beach before attacking the city. RDF forces now concentrated on fighting the battlepods in Macross city. Captain Gloval ordered the immediate takeoff of the SDF-1 to take the battle away from the city. While RDF and Zentraedi forces battled in the city its citizens fled to underground shelters. When Captain Gloval ordered the activation of the anti gravity gyros the gyros themselves were ripped out of the ship. Lieutenant Commander Fokker returns to bring Hunter and Minmei to the safety of the SDF-1. Captain Gloval tries to determine the Zentraedi strategy while Breetai puzzles over how to capture the SDF-1 with the least amount of damage. Exedore warns his commander that, once free of the planet’s gravity, the ship can execute a hyperspace fold that will carry them beyond the reach of Zentraedi weapons. Breetai reluctantly increases the laser bombardment. On board the SDF-1, Fokker shows Rick that they have managed to salvage the young man’s flying circus aircraft. Rick is happy to give up the Veritech in exchange for his old familiar racer – a vehicle that doesn’t change shape or fire laser. His first taste of battle was more than enough; Rick has no desire to become a fighter pilot. Fokker returns to duty, leaving Rick and Minmei with the little plane. Minmei wants to return to her aunt and uncle in the evacuation shelter on Macross Island. Rick still wants to impress the girl and, although he has promised Fokker he won’t wander off, he decides to fly back to the island so that girl can rejoin her family. In the interim, Captain Gloval has decided to make an emergency jump into hyperspace at an altitude of 2,000 feet above Macross Island. To the Zentraedi’s amazement, the SDF-1 executes a space fold maneuver that places them beyond reach of battle. In minutes, the besieged SDF-1 and her crew find themselves in the icy expanse of deep space, but they also discover that their proximity to Earth during the fold has caused Macross Island to be transported with them. Disaster piles on disaster as they find themselves orbiting the planet Pluto instead of the moon. Then, when they prepare to re-fold to get back to earth, they discover that the fold system has vanished into thin air. Gloval observes that it’s going to be a long trip back home. While the bridge crew of the SDF-1 plans its next course of action, Rick Hunter tries a maneuver of his own. Initially trapped in the vacuum of space outside the battlefortress when the SDF-1 executed the fold, Rick and Minmei enter an unexplored area of the ship. With the radio broken, they have no way to call for help. Although Roy Fokker quickly determines that his friend is missing, he is ordered to assist in retrieving the surviving 70,000 civilians of Macross Island. The two young people are left to their own resources. While Fokker and his pilots salvage what they can, Rick and Minmei explore their surroundings and try to find their way to the center of the ship. However, the size of the battlefortress is more than they can handle, and eventually they are reduced to simply finding the means to stay alive. They pass the time in conversation, becoming good friends. Rick Hunter finds his companion charming as well as beautiful. His sense of responsibility for Lynn Minmei evolves into genuine affection. They spend many days trapped in the confines of the ship, but just as they lose hope of ever seeing friends and family again, a freak accident caused by a construction crew assembling Macross City within the SDF-1 results in rescue of the two young people.

Attack on the SDF-1[]

To raise morale, Lynn Minmei persuades her aunt and uncle to open their Chinese restaurant up in space. Rick learns that the VF-1 Valkyries can also fly in space and is given an offer by Roy to try and fly one again, but this also means he must join the military. Because the conduit connected the main gun to the main furnace was lost when the fold system disappeared. Dr. Emil Lang proposes a radical idea: transform the SDF-1 so it can use its main gun against the Zentraedi. Captain Gloval hesitates because the civilians have finally started to settle down. The SDF-1 is being hounded by the Zentraedi; Breetai wonders why the SDF-1 hasn't fired its main cannon, and Exedore suggests that they should hit harder.

Exedore suggests to Breetai that the Zentraedi forces should hit harder to get a response out of the SDF-1.

In the light of the advancement by the Zentraedi, Gloval and the crew decide to transform the SDF-1 into a humanoid configuration. Many of the citizens aboard are injured in the transformation,

and Rick is tasked to save Minmei yet again. After the short skirmish, Rick decides to join the military.

Battle of Saturn's Rings[]

In its new configuration, the SDF-1 is able to repel the attacking Zentraedi forces, although at great cost to Macross City. The modular transformation destroys much of the city, due to the radical effects on the fortress’s basic structure. In the months that follow, the citizens pull together and repair the damage. Once again, they try to lead normal lives. Rick Hunter decides to join the Robotech Defense Force after all and becomes a Veritech fighter pilot. As Rick gets the unsettling information that his new commanding officer is Lisa Hayes, someone he still refers to as “that old sourpuss”, Captain Gloval receives his own bad news. In trying to trace the missing fold system generator, his crew has discovered that its disappearance may have distorted the actual fabric of the space/time continuum. Gloval can only guess at how this will affect their attempt to return to Earth. The Zentraedi track the SDF-1 to its hiding place in the rings of Saturn. Captain Gloval attempts a blitzkrieg maneuver to take them past the alien armada. As the SDF-1 battles its way through, Rick Hunter takes part in his official combat duty. On the bridge, Lisa Hayes comes up with an offensive strategy of her own – the Daedalus maneuver – which allows the SDF-1 to defeat the main Zentraedi destroyer.

Battle of Mars[]

Blazer

Emerging from hyperspace above Mars, Breetai sets an ambush for the SDF-1. He also calls up for reinforcement – the 7th Mechanized Division of the Botoru Fleet. Exedore is alarmed at this turn of events. The Botoru division is commanded by Khyron, a ruthless Zentraedi warlord who has earned himself the nickname “Backstabber”. Khyron’s motto is victory at all costs – even at the unnecessary risk of his own men. Breetai agrees that Khyron’s measures are extreme at best, but so far, the warlord’s division has remained undefeated. Breetai cannot afford to lose the SDF-1. In Macross City, Rick Hunter receives a personal invitation from Lynn Minmei to the girl’s sixteenth birthday party. Minmei is exited about the event and pleased with the announced news of the recent Zentraedi defeat. Rick regretfully advises her that the announcement is only so much morale-building propaganda. The Veritech squads have suffered heavy casualties and didn’t hit half the reported targets. Minmei brushes the sobering news aside. She can’t imagine why anyone would want to stay depressed on her birthday. As the SDF-1 attains orbit around Mars, they try to establish contact with Sara base. Lisa Hayes is particularly interested in reaching Sara since her fiancé, Karl Riber, is stationed at the observation post. A gentle young man, Riber had optioned for space duty in order to avoid the Global Civil War. Lisa had joined the armed forces in order to apply for duty on Mars so that she could be with him. It’s been a long time since they’ve seen each other. Lisa is devastated when she learns Sara base has been destroyed and that there are no survivors. Captain Gloval lands the battlefortress close to the base itself. He deploys a company of destroids to secure available supplies. Veritech fighters are launched to observe the area and cover the transport vehicles. Lisa requests permission to leave the ship and check out the base personally. Gloval cautions her to be careful and allows her to go. As Lisa explores the base and the last of the supplies are being loaded on the SDF-1, Khyron’s forces attack. Gravity mines prevent the battlefortress from taking off. The SDF-1 is unable to escape. Gloval orders Claudia Grant to contact Lisa at Sara base. He tells Lisa to find the reflex furnace controls and place them in overdrive. Lisa follows through, knowing that it will destroy the base as well as the gravity mines. She hopes the explosion will destroy her, too. Without Riber, Lisa has no desire to live. At the last minute, Rick Hunter arrives to take Lisa back to the ship. Rick actually has to carry her out. They escape with no time to spare. Khyron endures his first defeat at Micronians hands. He finds the sensation annoying – and intriguing.

2nd Attack on the SDF-1[]

Beam Procedure

As Minmei prepares for her sixteenth birthday, the SDF-1 continues to orbit Mars. Operating on auxiliary power, the battlefortress is under a constant barrage of fire from alien ships and battle pods. With its main engines damaged and the fold system inoperative, the SDF-1 is unable to escape. Khyron and his Zentraedi troops press their advantage at every turn, despite Breetai’s orders to the contrary. The commander wants to capture the ship intact. To his chagrin, Rick Hunter finds that he’s not the only man invited to Lynn Minmei’s party. The popular girl has requested the presence of almost every fighter pilot on the ship. While he finds her natural enthusiasm and innocence pleasing, Rick can’t help but wish Minmei would focus her attention on one specific individual – like himself! Before he can press the case, Rick is called back to headquarters, where he is presented with the titanium Medal of Valor for distinguished service for his rescue of Lieutenant Commander Lisa Hayes. He is also promoted to the rank of lieutenant and introduced to the members of his new squad, Corporals Maximillian (Max) Sterling and Ben Dixon. The three young men go to Minmei’s party only to be called back to duty when Khyron begins another accelerated assault. Because Khyron has attacked against Breetai’s order, the Zentraedi commander orders a manual override that pulls the battle pods away from the space fortress – just as Khyron is about to defeat the SDF-1. Max distinguishes himself as an excellent fighter pilot. Unfortunately, Ben Dixon is a more enthusiastic than effective combatant. Rick is more concerned with the fact that he’s all but missed Minmei’s party, not to mention the fact that he’s been too busy to get her a present. When he returns, he gives her his Medal of valor. Minmei is delighted.

Battle of Macross City[]

SDF-1 goes boom

Khyron's ship approaches the SDF-1. (Macross Saga: To the Stars)

The Battle of Macross City was the final attack on the RDF by the Zentraedi Malcontent leader Khyron. During the attack, the SDF-1 was destroyed by Khyron's Warship, killing Henry Gloval, Vanessa Leeds, Kim Young, Sammie Porter, Khyron, Azonia, Grel, as well as hundreds of Humans and Zentraedi. (Macross Saga: To the Stars) Anatole Leonard would later refer to this battle as the final battle of the First Robotech War, (Masters Saga: Dana's Story) although it would be more accurate to call it the most infamous of the Malcontent Uprising attacks, but by no means the last. (Robotech: Battlecry)
