Senator Alphonso Russo was a politician serving in the United Earth Government at the start of the First Robotech War.

On the launch day of SDF-1, Senator Russo was in a limousine with Captain Gloval, he was smiling and waving to the citizens of Macross City on Macross Island and told Captain Gloval not to be so sour because the loyal citizens on the streets considered the Captain to be a hero and thus Captain Gloval was persuaded to wave. Later, he made a speech on a stage under the SDF-1, where he said it was the day the citizens had been looking forward for 10 years and that the Robotech project had been a tremendous asset to the economy of Macross City. Later that day, he entered the bridge of the SDF-1 to persuade Captain Gloval to launch the ship despite Gloval not wanting to take the ship into combat with raw recruits. His reasoning is that it was constructed to be a battleship, and the high investment costs. On the way off the bridge, he told the Bridge Bunnies that they were all counting on them.
